In the 1990s, the frivolity of earlier comics was supplanted by a flood of grit and self-importance that effectively drained any humor from the medium. Spiderman in particular saw a sharp turn to more serious subject matter, inspiring Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld to construct a Spiderman-like character rejuvenated with sordid humor and a lack of pretension.
