The Game Awards has featured a ton of big-name celebrities over the years, such as Pedro Pascal, Al Pacino, and Keanu Reeves. But 2023's annual celebration of video games—which went down in Los Angeles on Thursday night—featured some truly surprising appearances. Timothée Chalamet presented the Game of the Year, Jordan Peele revealed that he's working on a game with celebrated auteur Hideo Kojima, and Matthew McConaughey announced that he's leading a time-bending sci-fi game titled Exodus.
"I was going to come out and say the line that has preceded me all my years, 'All right, all right, all right,'" McConaughey joked. "But they said, 'Don't do that! Say, pew, pew, pew.'" Oscars-style quips from McConaughey was definitely something I didn't have on my Game Awards bingo card. But the True Detective star and future Yellowstone spinoff lead was there to announce a new project he's been working on. "The video game that I'm premiering is the first-ever video game that I've been a part of," he said. "I will be voicing a character in this game, and I will have a unique relationship with every player."

Exodus appears to be a Mass-Effect-esque journey through space—with time-dilation seemingly a major part of the adventure. (McConaughey joked about the obvious parallels with Interstellar.) Exodus is developed by Archetype Entertainment, which was founded in 2019 after splitting off from Wizards of the Coast—the creators of Magic the Gathering. Exodus will mark the studio's debut video game. "We’ve always dreamed of creating a game like Exodus, and we're thrilled to finally be making it with the support of an incredible team alongside us," Archetype co-founder Chad Robertson said in a press release. "We’re building a world we think players will want to immerse themselves in and we're eager for players to explore this new universe."
Though no release date has been revealed for Exodus, it doesn't take much to sign me up for more Matthew McConaughey adventures in space.
