The following contains major spoilers from House of the Dragon season 2 and beyond.

Sorry to any and all House of the Dragon fans, but the HBO series will not keep your favorite characters alive. After the season 2 premiere threatened to kill off Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) at the hands of two assassins in the night, audiences were quickly reminded that no one is safe. Don’t shoot (or behead) the messenger! Every character will eventually meet their end. House of the Dragon takes place several generations before Game of Thrones, after all. Some deaths—R.I.P. Jaehaerys!—just arrive a bit early. Aemond lives to fight another episode after the premiere, but will he actually die in season 2?

Unlike the latter half of Game of Thrones—which extended beyond George R.R. Martin’s series of novels—House of the Dragon’s scope is limited to Martin’s Fire & Blood. Anyone who has read the book (or spoiled it for themselves) knows how the entire story will play out. The show’s writers made changes where they could—such as Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and Ser Criston Cole’s (Fabian Frankel) relationship—but the series has kept close to the source material so far. If you already know what’s ahead, then you’re well aware that Aemond Targaryen’s days are numbered. He’s also far from the only one.

Aemond Dies in Combat with Daemon

I know. It’s insane. Sorry to break it to you here, but I did warn you. As the story unfolds, Daemon (Matt Smith) grows increasingly unsatisfied that he wasn’t able to eliminate Aemond with his little Blood and Cheese scheme. Plus, after another major battle that results in multiple casualties, Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) uncle-husband issues a final challenge to the one-eyed prince.

The two duke it out with their dragons over the burned-down castle. Daemon’s dragon, Caraxes, eventually grabs Aemond’s older dragon, Vhagar, by the neck. Aemond had chained himself to his dragon in fear of falling off during the fight, but Daemon had not. When the dragons are connected by Caraxes’s grip, Daemon leaps from the beast with his sword and stabs Aemond right through his sapphire eye. Both men and their dragons plummet to the sea. Though only Aemond’s body is eventually recovered, there’s not a chance in hell Daemon could have survived that.

Daemon’s dragon, Caraxes, is one of the only dragons large enough to take on Aemond and Vhagar.

When Will Aemond’s Death Happen on House of the Dragon?

It’s tough to say. With HBO’s renewal of House of the Dragon for a third season (and potentially more thereafter), the writers may look for ways to extend the war. And the show will likely wish to keep Smith and Mitchell around for longer than the season 2 finale. It’s possible that the event won’t occur in this version of the story until the very end of the series. We don’t want to spoil everything yet. Just know that shit’s going down when you hear Daemon proclaim, You. Me. Harrenhal.
