Anytime Barry Allen (The Flash), played by Ezra Miller, taps into his supernatural abilities, the film looks a little wonky. The screen appears fuzzy and colors look distorted as if the editing team ran out of time before the film was sent to theaters. Apparently, that was a creative choice intended to let the audience see the world from Barry’s point of view. His high-speed run is called “Speed Force” or “Chrono Bowl,” depending on how fast he’s going, and the film reflects his interpretation of events.

The first time this happens is in a high-stakes opening scene when Barry runs to Gotham City to help Bruce Wayne fix a falling building. Without spoiling too much, the mission goes awry when a bunch of babies fall out of a nursery window. Thankfully, Barry scoops them up in a matter of seconds, but the heroic sequence looks a bit off.

In an interview with Gizmodo, Andy and Barbara Musciettie, the director and producer of the film, explained the titular scene. “We used all real babies,” Barbara joked. “The idea, of course, is... we are in the perspective of the Flash," Andy said. "Everything is distorted in terms of lights and textures. We enter this ‘waterworld’ which is basically being in Barry’s POV. It was part of the design, so if it looks a little weird to you that was intended.”

The Flash premieres in theaters today, June 16th. If you want to see the effects for yourself, grab a ticket, take a seat, and get ready for a visual whirlwind.
