A little history lesson couldn't hurt anyone now and then! For Japan, the Tokugawa shogunate (renamed Toranaga in Shōgun) is one of the nation's most defining eras outside of World War II. It marked both the height and the eventual end of the samurai, as well as the end of the country's more isolationist policies.

After last week’spheasant fiasco, I was a little afraid of what Shōgun would have in store for us in episode 6. What new knowledge will this episode require from me? Will I need to learn even more about dry-aging bird meat? Will I have to call up another historian to understand some factoid about feudal Japan?
