Q&A with Laura Linney

ESQ: In P.S., was it awkward being with a much younger man?

LL: I'm more than happy to be the older woman in that situation. I've never had a relationship with a younger man, so it was fun. Besides, I was Topher Grace's first sex scene. He was scared to death, which I found quite flattering. I'm very proud to be the woman to deflower him on film.

ESQ: Who did you lose your film virginity to?

LL: Kevin Kline, in Dave. It's the most unnatural thing in the world. You're terrified before, you're scared to death during, and then afterward, you're still in shock. But it gets easier.

ESQ: So you didn't mind the uncomfortably realistic sex scene with Liam Neeson in Kinsey?

LL: I consider Liam one of my closest friends. For us, it was fun.

ESQ: And come to think of it, you also have sex with Peter Sarsgaard in the film.

LL: I'm just having sex all over the place. These people were experimenting. God knows they weren't the first to ever do this, and God knows they won't be the last.

ESQ: I couldn't help but notice that you were a little chubbier in Kinsey than in P.S. How much weight did you have to gain for the movie?

LL: All told, I think about 22 pounds. I ate a lot of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. At first it's fantastic. Eventually, though, you just feel foul. And even though my friends knew I was gaining weight for the movie, I definitely got some looks. I know there were some "Oh, she must not be very happy" observations.
