Sunday night, Lily Gladstone made history at the Golden Globes when she won Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon, becoming the first indigenous actress to receive the award. Gladstone thanked her community, the Blackfeet Nation, during her acceptance speech, for encouraging her to pursue the arts. “This is for every little res kid,” she said. “Every little urban kid, every little native kid out there who has a dream. Who is seeing themselves represented in our stories, told by ourselves, in our own words, with tremendous allies and tremendous trust, with and of each other.”
Killers of the Flower Moon is a crime drama that’s based on a true story, starring Gladstone, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert De Niro. The film travels back in time to honor Oklahoma's Osage Nation—and depict the horrors they faced at the hands of white Americans who wanted to claim their land and oil.
If you've seen Flower Moon, you already know that the film's staggering three-plus-hour runtime never hits a lull as you watch Gladstone's Mollie Burkhart—a member of the Osage Nation—learn who she can and cannot trust. In an interview with TIME, Scorsese revealed that somewhere in his creative process, he rewrote the script to focus more on Mollie and her community. “After a certain point, I realized I was making a movie about all the white guys,” he said. “Meaning I was taking the approach from the outside in, which concerned me.”
