Watch out, my fellow meteorologists, because Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters just crashed into theaters. The natural-disaster thriller starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones is exceeding expectations at the box office. As Variety reports, Twisters grossed more than $80.5 million in its opening weekend. Summer blockbusters are back, baby,
Twisters is a quasi-sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Twister. The new film stars Powell as Tyler Owens, a self-proclaimed “tornado wrangler.” When tornado outbreaks hit Oklahoma, he crosses paths with Kate (Edgar-Jones) and Javi (Anthony Ramos), a pair of storm-chasing meteorologists. Chung told Entertainment Weekly that he wanted Twisters to build upon the original film’s magic. “To me, it felt like an adventure movie, and I always loved how that movie inspired a generation of meteorologists and people who were interested in science and weather just because it made that study feel like an adventure,” he said. “That’s something that I wanted to retain with this one.”

He nailed it. Twisters has received positive reviews from critics—and even a nod from Tom Cruise. Ramos sat near Cruise at the London premiere and told People the actor was “losing his mind” during the screening. “Tom just kept hitting me the whole entire movie,” Ramos said. “He keeps hitting me because he’s excited about different moments, and he’s laughing. He’s just laughing out loud the whole entire film.” After the premiere, Cruise gave Ramos his stamp of approval: “Yo, bro, good man. Good stuff.”
Even though Twisters is technically a sequel to the 1996 film, don’t count on seeing any characters from the original. Powell told Vogue the follow-up is a “stand-alone story in the modern day.” Still, he thinks the concept will resonate with the next generation of viewers. “Human versus weather is a very universal idea,” he said, noting how powerless people feel amid natural disasters.
You can watch the trio brave the storm in theaters now. Unfortunately, those planning to tune in from home will have to wait for Twisters to complete its theatrical run. Rest assured, when it hits the streaming-verse, you’ll be the first to know.
